Mr Brooks (2007)
Dir Bruce A Evans
Written by Bruce A Evans, Raynold Gideon
Kevin Costner, Demi Moore, William Hurt, Dane Cook, Marg Helgenberger, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Danielle Panabaker.
Earl Brooks is a successful businessman, is also a cold blooded serial killer, The Thumbprint killer – who has an “imaginary” friend Marshall. Soon he is trailed by a seasoned cop, Atwood, and also a witness to one of his kills ‘Mr Smith’ who wants ‘Mr Brooks’ to teach him how to be a killer.
Decent thriller, with plenty of great casting – with Costner and Hurt giving great chemistry as the calm collected Brooks and his ‘imaginary’ best friend. Moore is strong and confident as Atwood, whose character is given plenty of backstory (another killer out for revenge and the painful divorce she is going through). Her character is one of the best parts of the movie.
The subplot of Brooks’ daughter does make the film feel a little overbearing, and probably could have been done without; and really doesn’t add much to the overall end result. HAD the film gotten the once promised two sequels, then it may have made more sense to add. Sadly the passing of Hurt some years back, and the almost eighteen years since it was released, means this will never come to be.
A recommend from me.
