Twisters (2024)
Dir Lee Isaac Chung
Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Maura Tierney.
Kate is an experienced storm chaser, who along with her team is trying to lower the intensity of tornados. When their project fails, and several members are killed – Kate retires and moves from rural America to NYC. Five years later, the only other surviving member of the team Javi, returns to ask her to assist his new team with a way to scan tornados. Reluctantly she joins, and meets another ragtag team of storm chasers. This is an ‘in name’ only movie, and has no tie in with the original film from 1996.
Decent ‘action disaster’ flick, which is well directed, making great use of new technology of drones etc. There are some solid action sequences, such as the opening moments, the rodeo and pool sequence and the oil refinery explosion are exciting, the film does film a little long at 122m.
The setting of Middle America feels real, especially for those of us who don’t live there, and the aftermaths of the disasters are all very well done too.
The characters are all quite likeable, but they take a while to warm up to, and they are quite well rounded. Powell especially as the leader of the YouTube team who view storm chasing as a thrill ride rather than for science. Kate is likeable enough, but Edgar-Jones feels a little miscast as the lead role. She does well in some of the action sequences, but struggles with some of the more heavy emotional parts of the film. They are refreshingly paired well together, and have some strong on screen chemistry.
There is a pretty fun country/western score that plays alongside some of the action sequences, and a half decent score too – that doesn’t even feel like it’s trying too hard.
