Peppermint (2018)
Dir Pierre Morel
Jennifer Garner, John Gallagher Jr, John Ortiz.
Five years ago, Riley North had it all. The happy marriage, and beautiful daughter. When her husband decided to drop out of a bank robbery, the mob boss decided to make an example of him, and had his family killed. Only Riley survived, and now is out for revenge.
There is some solid direction from Morel – which has some okay moments – especially the close shots and with a primary amount of the action in the dark, this is done well. The use of static effects is a little overused though.
The performances are pretty solid, with Garner giving both an emotional performance – and she has shown she can handle action in the past – and does here too. There is a forgettable villain, and there is the token cops with a third act ‘twist’ that is a little on the nose. Also, how many goons does the bad guy have???
The screenplay is just okay, and serves its perpose – and nothing memorable comes to mind with the setting. There is a fine score under the entire film too.
I enjoyed this, even though it was a run of the mill “revenge” movie. Give it a watch, it’s good for a night in.
