Captain America: Brave New World hires a new writer and scheduled additional shoots for mid-2024
Marvel Studios is trying to recover from its current run of bad luck. While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was a bright spot for the brand, the underperformance of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the low ratings for Secret Invasion, the Jonathan Majors controversy, the Daredevil: Born Again overhaul, and the low box office of The Marvels, the year showing the studio juggernaut in a vulnerability it hasn’t found itself in before. In fact, the behind-the-scenes drama used to be an ongoing issue at its comic rival, DC at Warner Bros. It was even reported last month that Anthony Mackie’s promotion to Captain America with Captain America: Brave New World was having poor test screenings and had planned some reshoots to fix whatever wasn’t working.
Deadline is now reporting that Captain America: Brave New World has hired a new writer to help punch up some scenes. Matthew Orton, who wrote the 2018 film Operation Finale and penned a script for the studio already with an episode of Moon Knight, as well as serving as a consulting producer on the show, has now been brought on to write new scenes and material. The movie serves as Sam Wilson’s first solo film as the new Captain America ever since Steve Rogers passed his shield onto him and then further explored in the Disney+ series Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Along with Mackie, Liv Tyler, Harrison Ford, Shira Haas, Tim Blake Nelson, Rosa Salazar, Danny Ramirez, and Carl Lumbly co-star in the film.
Disney shuffled their schedule for its upcoming releases, and while this Captain America film, formally titled New World Order, was nearly complete, it was pushed back to 2025 to allow for some extensive reshoots. Deadline adds that the pick-up shoots will aim for the spring to summer time in 2024. Last month, film critic Jeff Sneider and John Rocha talked about the movie on The Hot Mic podcast, where he revealed some exclusive news. He stated, “Here’s the exclusive stuff! I’m told that Captain America 4 did not do great in test screenings. Three sequences are being cut, and reshoots are being planned from January until May or June.” Rocha asked, “So, it did finish production, and it could have gone ahead of Deadpool 3. But now, because of these changes it is now being pushed back. Is that what you’re essentially saying?” Sneider responded, “Yeah. That’s why it’s getting a year-long delay, basically.”
