Interviews: Tony Shalhoub and Andy Breckman discuss Mr. Monk’s Last Case and beyond
In the early 2000s, Monk was a hit on USA Network that held the record for most watched cable series at the time. After seven seasons, the series left the air. Now, over a decade later, Adrian Monk is back in Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie, with the original cast in tow for a feature film now airing on Peacock. With the same sense of humor and trademark approach to solving impossible crimes, Monk is in for his most personal case to date.
Here is the plot for Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie: After losing a book deal, retired detective Adrian Monk is left feeling despondent as he is now unable to help pay for his stepdaughter Molly’s wedding. The day before Molly’s wedding, her fiancé Griffin is killed while bungee jumping. Molly is convinced Griffin was murdered and enlists Monk’s help to solve the case.
I got the chance to chat with the creator and star of Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie, Andy Breckman and Tony Shalhoub. Andy Breckman discussed how they approached making the Monk movie differently than the series while retaining the tone and feel of the franchise. Tony Shalhoub talked about slipping back into character and how he looks the same at age seventy as he did almost twenty years ago. Both Breckman and Shalhoub also talked about the potential future for more Monk movies. Check out the full interview in the embed above and read our review of Mr. Monk’s Last Case here.
