The Smack: Casey Affleck, Sam Rockwell, Marisa Tomei, & Kathy Bates to lead a high-stakes casino heist film
Who’s up for a solid caper? Concourse Media, that’s who! According to Deadline, the studio has snagged the worldwide rights to The Smack, an upcoming con/heist thriller starring an exciting ensemble cast, which includes Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea, Good Will Hunting, Gone Baby Gone), Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Vinny, Spider-Man: No Way Home, The Wrestler), Sam Rockwell (The Bad Guys 2, Jojo Rabbit, The Green Mile), and Kathy Bates (Misery, Fried Green Tomatoes, Matlock).
What’s The Smack about?
The Smack, based on the 2017 novel by Richard Lange, “follows a down-on-his-luck conman (Affleck) who teams up with a casino waitress to execute a high-stakes con targeting a hidden cache of stolen U.S. military cash. What starts off as an easy plan spirals into a deadly game as they collide with dangerous criminals chasing the same score.”
The Perfect Guy and Jacob’s Ladder (2019) director David M. Rosenthal directs The Smack from a script by Rosenthal and Keith Kjarval. On the production side, Unified Pictures’ Kjarval is producing alongside Sam Rockwell and Mark Berger via Play Hooky, with Andrea Bucko of Sugar Rush Pictures. Matthew Shreder and Kristin Harris are executive producers.

Heist films are still in vogue
With films like Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, Play Dirty, The Pickup, and the promise of a new Ocean’s movie on the horizon, audiences are game to watch their favorite stars make off with a butt-load of cash while sticking it to those who would keep it for themselves. I love the idea of The Smack taking place in a casino. That’s old-school. There’s so much atmosphere and chaos in that setting. It’s a place where anything can go wrong, and usually does. Affleck, Tomei, Rockwell, and Bates are a killer ensemble to lead Rosenthal’s adaptation of Lange’s novel, and I’m excited to see how s**t goes sideways in this upcoming crime thriller.
What are your favorite heist-related films? For me, nothing beats The Great Muppet Caper, but I’ll enjoy a screening of Heat, Jackie Brown, A Fish Called Wanda, or The Ladykillers any day of the week.
