Chucky’s Callum Vinson to star as Atreus alongside Ryan Hurst in Prime Video’s God of War series

Ryan Hurst (Kratos) had better start practicing his “boy” shouts, because Prime Video‘s God of War series has found its Atreus in Callum Vinson (Chucky, Long Bright River). If you’ve not played the game, Atreus is Kratos’s 10-year-old son, whom players eventually control for a portion of the epic mythology-themed video game.

Who is Atreus?

In the 2018 game developed by Santa Monica Studios, Atreus is an eager and adventuresome hunter who grew up in a remote forest cabin, isolated from the rest of the world and raised almost entirely by his mother, Faye. After his mother’s death, Kratos must step up as the boy’s only parent and guiding light in a world filled with monsters and villains. Atreus is a skilled archer, magic user, shapeshifter, and more. Atreus and Kratos’s relationship is strained, with Kratos coming off as distant, cold, and reluctant. However, as circumstances force the father-and-son duo to work together, Kratos learns to use a softer touch with the boy as he teaches him about the dangers of their world.

Who else stars in Prime Video’s God of War series?

In addition to Hurst, Vinson joins previously announced Max Parker as Heimdall, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, and Danny Woodburn as Brok. Pre-production for God of War is underway in Vancouver. Prime Video gave the series a two-season order, though we could always get more if it takes off.

While you can catch Callum Vinson in an episode of Netflix’s The Night Agent, you’ll soon find the young actor playing Young Jason Voorhees in the Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake, starring Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees, with Danielle Kotch, William Catlett, Cameron Scoggins, Joy Suprano, Brian J. Carter, Nancy Nagrant, and more filling out the primary cast.

Praise the gods

As a fan of Sony’s God of War franchise since 2005, I’m incredibly excited to see what Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions, have cooking for Prime Video’s God of War series. Prime Video has had tremendous success with its Fallout series. If the studio can take as much care with God of War, we could be in for a treat. Kratos’s story of rage, redemption, and closure is powerful, and the father/son sparring throughout the adventure could make for great television. Let’s go!
