Netflix’s animated Ghostbusters movie captures a new writer
It’s been a hot minute since it was reported that Sony Pictures Animation would team up with Netflix to develop an animated Ghostbusters movie, and there’s finally an update. According to Jeff Sneider, Sam Jarvis (Dollface) has been tapped to write the latest draft of the script. Previous drafts were penned by Yoni Brenner (The Bad Guys 2) and Christy Hall (It Ends With Us)
What We Know About the Animated Ghostbusters Movie
The project is set to be directed by Kris Pearn (The Willoughbys), but plot details are still being kept under wraps. Netflix is also working on an animated series based on the iconic franchise, but it’s not clear if it will have any connection to the animated movie.
The studio has been trying to get an animated Ghostbusters movie off the ground for a long time. Original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman first announced an animated project over a decade ago. At the time, it was rumoured that the story would switch things up and be told from the ghosts’ perspective. Fletcher Moules, the man behind those Clash of Clans animated ads we could never escape from, was set to direct.
It lay dormant for years, but was resurrected in 2022 with Jennifer Kluska (Hotel Transylvania: Transformania) and Chris Prynoski (Big Mouth) taking over as directors. Here’s hoping this latest iteration actually takes off.
What’s Next for Ghostbusters?
The last film in the franchise, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, wasn’t an enormous success. It grossed $201 million worldwide, but with a budget of $100 million. However, director Gil Kenan has teased that more movies are in the works. “The answer is yes, Jason (and I), we take the responsibility and the joy of being the keepers of the flame of Ghostbusters very seriously,” he said. “We definitely are continuing the conversation of telling big Ghostbuster stories on the big screen. And stay tuned. There’ll be more.“
It’s too early to say what the net installment will bring, but Dan Aykroyd has said he doesn’t believe any of the OG Ghostbusters will appear. “I don’t see that coming,” he said. “I don’t see where they would need us to carry it on. They’ve got a whole new cast, and they’ve got whole new ideas.“
