Revenge is a twisted road in the trailer for Alesha Harris’ Is God Is
Alesha Harris’ play comes to life on screen in the new trailer for Is God Is. Orion Pictures has just released the new look at the film online. The cast is stacked with names like Kara Young, Mallori Johnson, Janelle Monáe, Erika Alexander, Mykelti Williamson, Josiah Cross, with Vivica A. Fox and Sterling K. Brown. Harris both adapted her stage play into a screenplay and helmed the project as the director, marking her feature film debut. And she looks to be making a big splash in the movie world with how unhinged the trailer is.
The official synopsis reads,
“In Is God Is, two sisters embark on an epic quest for revenge, confronting a charged family history that will push them to extraordinary lengths. The film is Aleshea Harris’ directorial debut and is based on Harris’ adaptation of her award-winning play of the same name.”
Harris also produces her film with Tessa Thompson, Kishori Rajan, Riva Marker and Janicza Bravo on board as the film’s producers. Meanwhile, the executive producers include Stacy O’Neil, Nicole King and Kenneth Yu.
Harris spoke with Essence recently to talk about putting her first feature together. When asked about how she was able to compile an all-star cast, she explained, “I knew Kara from a reading I had done. So we started narrowing things down and got down to Kara and Mallori because they had tremendous chemistry. They were able to just really work off of each other beautifully, and they were able to play a lot of nuance, which I needed for the twins. And I was thinking that it would be a good idea to surround these two breakout younger actresses with people who we might have more knowledge of, who’ve been in the game a little bit longer. And so we just approached folks, gave them the script, gave them my vision. Sometimes I would have a conversation with them and they got on board. Luckily for me, well for all of us, they were enthusiastic about the project.”
It’s definitely nice to see Vivica A. Fox back and in a unique kind of role. Seeing Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair at the theater last year reminded me of how good she is and how cool a screen presence she had, but somehow, she hadn’t had as many big projects following that film. Equally, Erika Alexander was a pleasure to watch in American Fiction, as someone who grew up watching her in The Cosby Show and Living Single, it’s great to see her get these kinds of roles.
Is God Is hits the road into theaters on May 15.
