The Wrecking Crew director shares ideas for a sequel

SPOILERS for The Wrecking Crew. Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa joined forces in The Wrecking Crew, a buddy-cop action-comedy that debuted on Prime Video last month. The film was well-received, so could a follow-up be in order? In an interview for THR, The Wrecking Crew director Ángel Manuel Soto told Andy Muschietti about a possible sequel.

The Wrecking Crew Sequel

The ending of the film finds Jonny (Momoa) given the name of the man who killed his mother on a slip of paper, but he chooses to burn it. In Soto’s mind, Jonny memorized the name beforehand, leaving the door open for him to seek revenge in a sequel.

“There are several things that seem interesting to me [for a sequel]. That’s one of them,” Soto explained. “If there’s a killer on the loose, are they really going to let it go? I think there’s a good beginning for the second one there. And the other thing that seems interesting to me is that the yakuza that they kill, Nakamura (Miyavi), he’s not the boss, he’s someone’s son. It seems to me that there’s material there for a sequel.“

What’s The Wrecking Crew About?

Set in the streets of Hawaii, The Wrecking Crew follows two estranged half-brothers, Jonny (Momoa) and James (Bautista), who are forced to reunite after their father’s mysterious death. As they set out to uncover the truth, buried secrets resurface, and loyalties are tested, unveiling a conspiracy that can tear their family apart. Together, they are ready to WRECK anything that gets in their way.

The film was directed by Angel Manuel Soto (Blue Beetle) from a script by Jonathan Tropper (Star Wars: Starfighter). In addition to Bautista and Momoa, the film stars Claes Bang, Temuera Morrison, Jacob Batalon, Frankie Adams, Miyavi, with Stephen Root and Morena Baccarin.

What’s Next for Bautista and Momoa?

Bautista is currently in the midst of shooting Chad Stahelski’s highly anticipated Highlander reboot. He plays the Kurgan. Production on Highlander was supposed to begin last fall, but was delayed after Henry Cavill was injured during training.

As for Momoa, he also has a significant role in his future, as he will be playing Lobo in the DCU. It’s a character Momoa has wanted to play for a long time, and even playing Aquaman in the DCEU wasn’t going to stand in his way. You can catch a glimpse of Momoa as Lobo in last month’s Supergirl teaser.
