Scream 4 was meant to launch a new trilogy which would have changed everything
SPOILERS for Scream 4. After the original Scream trilogy, it took over a decade for the franchise to return with Scream 4. Unfortunately, the film didn’t ignite the box office the way the studio had hoped. Combined with the tragic passing of director Wes Craven, the series slipped back into hibernation for another ten years. Yet according to writer Kevin Williamson, Scream 4 was never meant to be a one-off comeback—it was designed as the launchpad for an entirely new trilogy, one that would have taken the franchise in a bold and unexpected direction.
The Original Vision for the Scream 4 Trilogy
So, if you’re still with us, you’ll know that the main killer of Scream 4 was Jill (Emma Roberts), Sidney Prescott’s cousin. She masterminded the killings because she was jealous of the fame that Sidney received for surviving the previous killing sprees. In the film, Jill is killed off, but Williamson originally wanted her to survive and get away with it.
“Scream 4 was about Emma Roberts and her character Jill,” Williamson told CinePOP. “In my original conceit, Jill survived and went to college. And in college… she got away with it all… all the killings in Scream 4… and she was now the new Sidney. She was the new celebrity victim. And she was loving it. And someone figured her out, and started killing all the people in her life.“
“And so in order for her not to be exposed as the killer, she had to find the killer. And that was Scream 5,” Williamson explained.
It’s a very interesting idea. A Ghostface killer getting away with it. Perhaps that’s something that could return in a future movie. As for his version of Scream 6, Williamson said it would have involved Gale Weathers trying to rebuild her life without Dewey (who would have been killed off in Scream 5) as she begins dating a man who may or may not be the killer.
Williamson is Back for Scream 7
Williamson has returned to the Scream franchise as the writer and director of Scream 7. Here’s the official synopsis: “When a new Ghostface killer emerges in the quiet town where Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) has built a new life, her darkest fears are realized as her daughter (Isabel May) becomes the next target. Determined to protect her family, Sidney must face the horrors of her past to put an end to the bloodshed once and for all.” The final trailer for Scream 7 was released earlier today, with the film set to hit theaters on February 27.
