Sony planning to reboot the Spider-Man Universe, but have they learned their lesson?
Aside from the Venom trilogy, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe was a big failure. Not only did Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter falter at the box office, but they were also critically trashed. However, Sony Pictures chairman and CEO Tom Rothman has confirmed that the studio is planning a reboot of the Spider-Man Universe.
Sony Spider-Man Universe Reboot
On The Town with Matt Beloni podcast, Rothman was asked if the Spider-Man Universe was dead. Rotham confirmed it wasn’t and said the franchise would return at some point. When asked if it would be a “fresh reboot” with “new people,” Rothman said, “Yes.“
It remains to be seen exactly how the franchise will change, but the last decade has been a clear example of what not to do. Sure, the Venom movies were fun (largely thanks to Tom Hardy), but the others felt like they were pulled out of the early 2000s in the worst way possible. And would it be too much to ask for Spider-Man to be involved, at least somewhat?
Why Spider-Man: No Way Home Didn’t Screen in China
Speaking of Spider-Man, Rothman also touched upon Spider-Man: No Way Home, the most successful Spidey film in the franchise. It grossed over $1.9 billion worldwide, but Rothman can’t help but be pissed off that it didn’t cross $2 billion. “You say, ‘$1.9 billion, what’s wrong with [saying] 2?’” he said. “Well, it didn’t get into China, but in my mind [the film’s box office is] over 2 [billion] because I know what we would have done in China.“
As for why the sequel didn’t screen in China, Rothman said they had a request he just wouldn’t agree to. “They just said, ‘Small thing, no problem, just cut out the Statue of Liberty’ — which is where the climax is,” he explained. “That was their request. Also, I really didn’t look forward to sitting in front of Congress telling them why I cut the Statue of Liberty out at the request of the Chinese Communist Party.“
Animated Venom Movie in the Works
It was announced last week that Sony is developing an animated Venom movie and has tapped Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, the directors of Final Destination: Bloodlines, to direct and produce it. Tom Hardy, who played the character in the three live-action movies, is involved in the project, although it’s unclear exactly how. He may produce the film, or even return to voice Venom.
