Box Office Predictions: Scream 7 Will Easily Take The Top Spot

Chris

After a quiet weekend at the box office, which saw GOAT nab the top spot from the (somewhat) underperforming Wuthering Heights, theaters are about to get a boost with the arrival of Scream 7. Long in the works and controversial (after star Melissa Barrera was dismissed, the original director quit, and series mastermind Kevin Williamson took over), many believe the film will set a franchise record. The highest-opening movie in the franchise so far is Scream VI, which opened with just over $44 million. Could the film make $50 million?

My thought is no — Scream 7 will not set a franchise record, with the film looking to me like it will make about $40 million, which is still a solid start. Why no record? The advance buzz on the movie has been pretty bad, with relatively few critics’ screenings. However, it did have premiere screenings in a few markets last night, and the buzz has been decent, making it seem like Paramount should have screened the film more widely (it didn’t even get a traditional press junket).

Otherwise, GOAT shouldn’t have any trouble taking second place, with it looking at about $10 million, as family audiences are still being somewhat underserved out there. Wuthering Heights shouldn’t be too far behind with about $8 million. The concert film EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert seems like it could be a surprise in its wide break, with about $5 million in the cards (it did really well in a limited IMAX release last weekend), while the faith-based I Can Only Imagine 2 should round out the top five with $4 million.

Here are our predictions:

Scream 7: $40 million

GOAT: $10 million

Wuthering Heights: $8 million

EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert: $5 million

I Can Only Imagine 2: $4 million
