LOVE, DEATH + ROBOTS | Official Trailer

Lamorne Morris to Voice the Monday-Hating, Lasagna-Eating Machine for a New Garfield Animated Series at Paramount+

The iconic orange exotic shorthair, Garfield, is coming back in a big way on Paramount+ as the studio announces an original new 2-D animated series, based on the slovenly antics of the cat created by Jim Davis. Stepping up to stuff his muzzle full of lasagna, kick Odie off tables, and ship Nermal to Abu Dhabi is Emmy-winning actor-comedian Lamorne Morris (New Girl, Fargo, Spider-Noir).

Garfield Has Been in Production For Seven Years

The tentatively titled Garfield series hails from Nickelodeon Animation Studios, with inspiration from the show coming from Jim Davis’ timeless comic strip about a sardonic, wisecracking, Pookie-carrying cat, Garfield, his owner, Jon Arbuckle, and their dim-witted dog, Odie. Stepping up as executive producers on the project are Dave H. Johnson (Middlemost Post) and John Trabbic III (SpongeBob SquarePants, Middlemost Post).

Garfield is currently in production and is a Paramount pet project. Paramount acquired the rights to Garfield several years ago, with the character now an essential part of the studio’s Paramount Products & Experiences portfolio. Oddly, Garfield never goes out of style. He’s been hanging onto back windshields for decades, his little suction-cupped paws adhering to the glass, a Cheshire smile on his face. Alongside characters like Snoopy, Garfield is a Macy’s Day Parade float, a comic strip collection best-seller, and so much more. He’s appeared in movies, television shows, video games, clothing stores, and beyond.

The Garfield animated series has been in production for seven years, and is the first animated series starring the character since 2009’s The Garfield Show, which ran for five seasons on Cartoon Network/Boomerang in the U.S. with Welker voicing the title character. Meanwhile, in 2024, Chris Pratt voiced the orange menace in The Garfield Movie, with plans for a sequel underway.

Growing Up With Garfield

Garfield will always hold a special place in my heart. I learned to read by reading Garfield comics and Calvin and Hobbes collections to my mom when I was in single digits. I grew up watching Garfield & Friends. I even watched the U.S. Acres portion of the show. That’s how you know I’m a real one. You could argue Garfield’s relevance in today’s entertainment spectrum, but the fact remains that Garfield endures despite trends changing by the minute. People adore Garfield’s dry wit, his love of food, and his hatred of Mondays. Same, Garfield, same. I’m genuinely excited about this animated series, especially since the studio is taking a 2-D approach to the animation. Bring it on!
