War Machine’s Alan Ritchson Says People Are “Sort Of Over” Watching Marvel-type Movies

For a guy who said, “You wouldn’t even have to pay me to play Batman,” Alan Ritchson certainly has a unique take on superhero cinema. While discussing his new alien-invasion action film War Machine (read our review here) with The Hollywood Reporter, Ritchson explained that the “Marvelization” of tentpole movies is giving audiences a reason to mentally and emotionally check out of the films. Ritchson said as much when asked why he connected with Mike Horton’s story for War Machine.

Ritchson on War Machine Being a Movie About Sacrifice

“While [War Machine] is pure fiction, there’s a call to brotherly love that is something sacred and eternal, whether you’re male or female. It’s about sacrificing yourself for a brother,” Ritchson began before talking about how cinema is suffering from characters that are too hard to kill.

Ritchson on the “Marvelization” of Cinema

“We’re living through a period of cinema, especially with the Marvelization of a lot of theatrical tentpole movies in which the protagonists are almost invincible, we’ve reduced the stakes to something wholly unwatchable,” Ritchson continued. “There’s no secret that people are sort of over watching Marvel-type movies. Our goal is to create a protagonist who is hanging on by a thread. Can we drag somebody to the brink of death and shoot it in a way that feels real and visceral so that people can actually relate to it on a human level? People are suffering out there. Life is hard, man. By crossing the finish line at the end of the movie, we remind ourselves that we can get through another day. As fun as this movie is, there’s something deeply human that we can connect to.”

Why Can’t We Have Both?

Like Ritchson, I prefer my characters to be flawed. However, superheroes and similar characters also serve a purpose in cinema. For some people, watching movies provides a certain degree of escapism, and watching all-powerful beings perform impossible acts of bravery is part of that experience. You don’t have to engage with that genre of filmmaking, but if you’re in the mood, it’s there. Watching human beings overcome adversity or form a bond through combat is also meaningful. Why not have and enjoy both?

War Machine is currently streaming on Netflix.
