Quentin Tarantino’s play gets a title and sets a time frame for its West End premiere

While Quentin Tarantino fans eagerly anticipate his much-hyped final film, his career takes a bit of a side road to the stage world. Tarantino’s next project will be a play, adding that it could open next fall in the West End. The Daily Mail said that the director has been negotiating with some “big Hollywood stars” to appear in the play, but Variety has heard it “could be an ensemble comprised of rising and well-known actors.“ It was recently said to be an “old-fashioned British farce, in the door-slamming, trouser-dropping, mistaken identity vein of Brian Rix or Ray Cooney.” Something like Michael Frayn’s Noises Off. Tarantino dabbled in a similar type of zany comedy in 1995 as one of four directors of the Tim Roth movie, Four Rooms.

The Title and Premiere

Variety now reports that Tarantino’s play will sport the title, The Popinjay Cavalier. It’s being described as a “swashbuckling comedy” and is produced by Sonia Friedman Productions and Sony Pictures Entertainment. The Popinjay Cavalier is set in 1830s Europe and the press release calls it “a rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise inspired by the grand swashbuckling epics of stage and screen.” Tarantino has been planning to premiere it in London on the West End. The official premiere date is yet to be announced, but it is being developed for an early 2027 debut.

“Oh, the play is all written. It is absolutely the next thing I’m going to do,” he said last year. “It’s absolutely my next project. And we’ll start doing it. We’ll start the ball rolling on it in January. Because I just figure it’s like the first of the year.“

The director added, “I just, you know, it’s probably going to take up a year and a half to two years of my life, all right? Because if it’s a success and I got to do the tour version of it and you know, all that kind of… I’m preparing for it to be a success. If it’s a flop, then I’ll be done very quickly. But even starting from scratch, it’ll probably be a year before it’s in front of an audience. So rather than dick around and everything, I was like, no, no, okay, I’m having a great time with my kids and with my family and everything.“
