71 Minutes: Jason Reitman producing thriller with a supernatural twist

According to THR, Sony Pictures has snagged 71 Minutes, a supernatural thriller which will be produced by Jason Reitman from an original spec script by Ian Shorr (Infinite).

71 Minutes

Details are few, but the project is described as a “real-time thriller about a man who needs to elude his pursuers in a ticking clock scenario and only has 71 minutes until the sun rises to do so.” Is the person being pursued a vampire? Could be interesting.

Reitman will produce 71 Minutes through his Ghost Corp banner alongside Erica Mills, but he’s not attached to direct at the moment.

Ian Shorr

Shorr has another high-concept project in the works, with Tim Miller (Deadpool) directing a time-loop movie starring Keanu Reeves. The untitled project, previously known as Shiver, has been described as having shades of Tom Cruise’s Edge of Tomorrow and Blake Lively’s The Shallows. It follows a “smuggler (Reeves) trapped in a time loop after a deadly double-cross while on a job in the Caribbean Sea, resulting in him surrounded by bodies, hostile mercenaries and thirsty sharks alike.“

The film is now shooting in the Dominican Republic. Massive water tanks are being used for the open sea sequences, with filming later set to move to the U.K. In addition to Reeves, the cast includes Callie Cooke (F1), Nicholas Duvernay (The White Lotus), Steven Waddington (Robin Hood), Abraham Popoola (Slow Horses), Bobby Holland Hanton (Now You See Me: Now You Don’t), and Anastasia Safonov (Eternity). It’s slated to hit theaters on August 13, 2027.

Astro Boy

As for Reitman, it was announced several weeks ago that he would be teaming up with Gil Kenan for a live-action adaptation of Osamu Tezuka’s Astro Boy. First published in 1952, the story follows a young android who was built to resemble the deceased son of a scientist. However, the scientist soon realizes that Astro can’t fill the void of his son and cruelly sells him to a circus. He’s later rescued by Dr. Ochanomizu, a kind-hearted man who becomes an adoptive father figure to the young Astro.

However, much like 71 Minutes, Reitman isn’t expected to direct the film. Although that could easily change depending on the script.
