S. Craig Zahler will finally start shooting his mob movie starring Vince Vaughn next week
S. Craig Zahler is finally set to return with his first new movie since Dragged Across Concrete, and production on the period mob movie will be kicking off very soon. The Bookie and the Brusier will start shooting in Toronto on April 1, with Vince Vaughn and Theo James in the lead roles. Zahler is directing from a script he wrote.
The Bookie and the Brusier
The film is set in 1959 New York City and features “a pensive, Jewish fellow named Rivner and an oversized Italian-American tough named Boscolo from the Lower East Side, both of whom served overseas in World War II and returned changed men who no longer fit inside the lives they’d left behind. Uninterested in taking orders from bosses or playing by the rules of polite society, the two friends partner up as a bookmaker and an enforcer and create an illicit gambling operation that proves to be very profitable, though risky, and their situation gets rather sticky when they find themselves stuck between a powerful Irish gang and the Mafia.“
This will mark Vaughn’s third project with Zahler, and he expressed his excitement during a recent Collider interview. “Then, with Zahler, we’re going to go do The Bookie & the Bruiser, which is a period mafia movie,” he said. “As much as I love all of his movies, I’m really excited. This is a very fun, very cool movie to be a part of.”
He previously starred in Brawl in Cell Block 99 and Dragged Across Concrete.
Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice
Vaughn will soon be seen starring alongside James Marsden and Eiza González in Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice, a sci-fi action-comedy that recently premiered at SXSW. It follows two friends who must navigate the dangerous world of organized crime, testing their loyalty and survival skills as they get deeper into the criminal underworld. Oh, and there’s a time machine involved.
Our own Chris Bumbray had a “rollicking good time” with the film, even calling it “the best action comedy I’ve seen in the last couple of years.” You can check out the rest of his review right here. It will be released on Hulu on March 27.
