Is Amazon MGM pushing to make a sequel to Project Hail Mary?

<Amaze, amaze, amaze>

Project Hail Mary might be the movie that truly helps Amazon MGM Studios take off as the first new major Hollywood studio in years. The film’s star, Ryan Gosling, explained to an audience at a New York screening of the film, “Six years ago, I got the manuscript, [It’s] the most ambitious thing I’ll ever make; it seemed impossible. It was too good not to give it a shot. Six years later, we did it. Here we are, we’re all back in theaters. It’s not your job to keep them open, it’s our job to make things that make it worth you coming out.” Gosling developed the project with former Sony executive Amy Pascal, then the distribution deal closed for the film after Amazon acquired MGM. Now, Project Hail Mary is breaking box office records and is proving to be a success with multiple demographics.

<Will Amazon make sequel, question?>

Amazon MGM is definitely basking in the success of their new hit. They took a chance, made a big move and it’s now paying off. So, where do they go from here? Franchise, of course, right? Wait, what? The Hollywood Reporter is saying that sources close to Amazon MGM reveal that the studio is not ruling out the possibility of making a sequel to Project Hail Mary. The sci-fi film with the lovable alien character hits all four quadrants of audiences (young and old, male and female). Much like a little dinosaur film from Steven Spielberg back in the day. So, what happened when Jurassic Park became a huge hit? Michael Crichton was persuaded to write a sequel book, which would, in turn, be adapted into a sequel film. That’s when he made The Lost World and Universal was quick to make the movie version.

THR’s sources say the same situation is in play at Amazon MGM. The studio realizes Andy Weir’s source material is the valuable mine and they aim to keep him in the driver’s seat. Weir has never written a sequel to one of his books, but it’s being said that he’s kicked around some ideas for a continuation, but none have ever been solid enough to write a book around. Both Weir and Gosling are repped by the same agency. Gosling seems to really take his projects seriously, even when doing Barbie, so as a producer, if he’s attached, he will probably make sure it maintains a sense of quality.

<What we think about movie, question?>

Project Hail Mary is getting a lot of praise with a critics’ aggregate of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 96% audience rating. Our editor-in-chief, Chris Bumbray, glowed about it in his 9/10 review, saying, “It’s really an impeccably made movie, with everyone involved doing superlative work, including Daniel Pemberton, who contributes a strong score. It’s the kind of movie that deserves to become the next Sinners, so hopefully audiences will give it a shot. It’s upbeat and leaves you walking out of the theater feeling optimistic — which I think all of us could use in these rather somber times.”
