Monument trailer: New Bryan Singer movie opens under the radar
Hark! A wild Bryan Singer appears! It’s been eight years since Bryan Singer’s Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, rocked theaters in 2018, and today, we’re getting a look at his latest film, Monument, a suspense thriller starring Mazzello and Jon Voight. It’s quite a surprise to hear from Singer after so many years, especially after Bohemian Rhapsody was nominated for Best Picture, won four Oscars, including Best Actor, and earned over $900 million worldwide. Typically, a filmmaker capitalizes on such monumental success, but it’s been a rough road for Singer. When that film hit theaters word got out that Singer had actually been fired from the film late in the production, with eventual Rocket Man director Dexter Fletcher stepping in to finish the film. Matters weren’t helped when bombshell reports of sexual misconduct surfaced (as outlined here) bringing an end to his career in mainstream film – at least for the time being.
After stepping away from the Hollywood spotlight and moving to Israel, Singer returns with a surprise film, Monument, about a father-son duo who don’t see eye to eye over a conflict in the Middle East.
What’s Monument about?
Here’s the official synopsis for Monument:
“In 1999, as Israel’s occupation of southern Lebanon nears its breaking point, renowned Israeli architect Yacov Rechter is commissioned to design a monument honoring fallen soldiers of the Christian South Lebanon Army. His idealistic son and apprentice, Amnon, challenges him to build something radically different: a memorial for all victims of the war — Christian and Muslim alike. As father and son clash over loyalty, complicity, and art, their creative journey mirrors that of a nation divided, and the monument becomes a haunting symbol of a peace that never lasts.”
Singer returns to his indie roots – but will anyone notice?
According to reports, Singer shot Monument in late 2023, with the film playing in theaters under a limited release arrangement. Shot in Greece, Monument currently has three positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Some note that Monument is a return to Singer’s indie roots, back when he was making films like Public Access, The Usual Suspects, and Apt Pupil. After those, Singer hit the big time with blockbusters like X-Men, X2: X-Men United, Superman Returns, and Valkyrie. He continued making X films for Fox with X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse, but by that time, the X formula had worn thin.
Singer’s Monument film gives him the chance to call the shots and present his creative vision with limited oversight, though the project’s sensitive subject matter could drive away moviegoers. Nevertheless, Monument is popping up in select theaters, and now that a trailer is circulating, even though it’s release seems quite anticlimactic with only three reviews logged on Rotten Tomatoes.
