Flesh of the Gods: Wagner Moura joins Kristen Stewart in vampire thriller from Mandy director and A24
Kristen Stewart has been attached to star in Flesh of the Gods, a vampire thriller from Mandy director Panos Cosmatos, for several years, but the project does finally appear to be moving forward. Deadline reports that recent Oscar nominee Wagner Moura has signed on to join Stewart in Flesh of the Gods and that A24 has boarded the project as the U.S. distributor.
Flesh of the Gods
The film follows “Raoul (Moura) and Alex (Stewart), a married couple in glittering ’80s Los Angeles who descend each evening from their luxury skyscraper condo and head into an electric nighttime realm. When they cross paths with the mysterious and enigmatic Nameless and her hard-partying cabal, Raoul and Alex are seduced into a glamorous, surrealistic world of hedonism, thrills and violence.“
Oscar Isaac was originally set to star alongside Stewart, but he had to exit due to a scheduling conflict. Cosmatos will direct, with Andrew Kevin Walker writing the script based on a story by Cosmatos and Walker.
In a statement when the project was presented at the Cannes Film Market, Cosmatos said, “Like Los Angeles itself, Flesh of the Gods inhabits the liminal realm between fantasy and nightmare. Both propulsive and hypnotic, Flesh will take you on a hot rod joy ride deep into the glittering heart of hell.“
Producer Adam McKay added: “This director, this writer, these incredible actors, vampires, choice ’80s punk, style and attitude for miles… that’s the film we’re bringing you today. We think it’s wildly commercial and wildly artful. Our ambitions are to make a movie that ripples through popular culture, fashion, music and film. Can you tell how excited I am?“
The Secret Agent
Moura received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his work on The Secret Agent. Set amid the political turmoil of 1977 Brazil, Moura stars as a technology expert who is forced into hiding and seeks help from the underground resistance as he tries to flee the country with his young son.
“Wagner Moura is the most recognizable actor to most audiences outside of Brazil. The Secret Agent marks the actor’s first Portuguese-language role in almost a decade, and he offers an incredible performance,” wrote our own Alex Maidy. “The Secret Agent echoes the best political thriller films of the 1970s while doing so through the lens of modern movie-making.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.
