Steven Spielberg expresses his love for Dune and experiencing the horrifying thrill of Zach Cregger’s Weapons

Science-fiction cinema fans are eating well in 2026, with movies like War Machine, Project Hail Mary, The End of Oak Street, Dune: Part Three, Disclosure Day, The Mandalorian and Grogu, and The Dog Stars lighting up screens throughout the year. While we know what audiences think of these offerings, thanks to sites like Rotten Tomatoes and seemingly endless social media reactions, it’s rare for a titan of the industry like Steven Spielberg to weigh in. Thankfully, Empire recently caught up with the Disclosure Day director and got him to discuss some of his favorite gems to grace the silver screen.

Spielberg on Villeneuve’s Dune being some of his favorite movies ever

“Recently, I’ve loved the Dune movies. They are among my favorite science-fiction movies, not just recently, but of all time. Especially the second film,” Spielberg explained to Empire. “I think [Part Two] is the best movie Denis [Villeneuve] has ever made. I cannot wait to see the third one. I’m sure he’ll show it to me early. I’m such a fan of his.”

In addition to showing his love for Villeneuve’s interpretation of Frank Herbert‘s Dune novels, Spielberg expressed his admiration for Zach Cregger’s Weapons, which he thinks is a force of nature in the horror genre.

Spielberg on the thrill of Zach Cregger’s Weapons

“I haven’t directed a horror film yet, and I’ve always wanted to, and someday I may. But there have been some great horror films out already that satisfy that itch,” Spielberg says. “When I see a great horror film like Weapons, I don’t have an itch I need to scratch. I see Weapons, and it doesn’t make me want to make a horror film that’s as scary or scarier than Weapons. It satisfies me so completely, it actually arrests my desire to someday make a really, really scary movie.”

That’s high praise for both Dune and Weapons coming from one of cinema’s greatest living filmmakers. Although now all I can think about is Spielberg directing a horror movie. What would that look like? Would he strive for an R-rated affair, or keep it PG-13 so families can enjoy the experience too? Would he approach an alien horror film? I don’t see Spielberg venturing into slasher territory. It could be psychological horror. Then again, if he has no desire to tap the horror genre, let sleeping dogs lie.

Either way, we’ve got Disclosure Day to look forward to, which comes to theaters on June 17, 2026. The upcoming sci-fi film, directed and co-written by Spielberg with David Koepp, stars Josh O’Connor, Emily Blunt, Eve Hewson, Colman Domingo, Wyatt Russell, Colin Firth, and more. The story revolves around someone proving, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that aliens exist. How would you react? Let us know in the comments section below.
