Alien 3: The Assembly Cut now streaming on HBO Max
David Fincher made his feature directorial debut with Alien 3, and it’s no secret that he went through hell during production, with constant studio interference and a script that was revised again and again. Fincher later disowned the film. So, when Fox wanted a director’s cut for home video, it was no surprise that Fincher wanted nothing to do with it. Thus, Alien 3: The Assembly Cut was born, which has become the preferred version for many fans. If you’ve never checked it out, you might be interested to know that Alien 3: The Assembly Cut is now streaming on HBO Max in the U.S.
What’s Different?
The Assembly Cut clocks in at 2 hours and 25 minutes, while the theatrical cut runs 1 hour and 54 minutes. With over 30 minutes of extended, alternate, and previously deleted scenes, the new cut is a very different experience. Although if you’re not a fan of Alien 3, I can’t imagine this cut will change your mind much.
There are a handful of differences between the two cuts, with the Alien bursting out of a dead ox in The Assembly Cut rather than from a dog in the theatrical.
Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and the prisoners actually succeed in trapping the Alien in The Assembly Cut, but Golic, a psychopathic inmate who becomes obsessed with the creature, lets it loose and becomes its latest victim.
The ending is also changed. The story ends with Ripley sacrificing herself by falling into a furnace of molten metal to prevent the Company from obtaining the Alien Queen embryo. In the theatrical cut, the chestburster erupts from her torso as she falls, but The Assembly Cut removes this last moment of gore and allows Ripley more of a dignified ending.
There are plenty of other moments of character building in the new cut, and while it certainly doesn’t bring the film up to the level of the previous two movies, it is an improvement.
Sigourney Weaver Liked Alien 3
Although there are many who don’t have too many nice things to say about Alien 3, Sigourney Weaver isn’t one of them. “I like it because it’s so utterly different from the first two,” she said at New York Comic-Con. “I felt that [20th Century] Fox was smart to keep choosing very gifted directors who wanted to do something completely different with the Alien story…I had total confidence in David.“
Where Weaver didn’t have so much faith was in the original Alien 3 screenplay by Vincent Ward, adding, “It had all these monks in space, in a kind of medieval garden. My character, I guess, crash landed and then I was in a coma for about half the movie. So I wasn’t crazy about that script…I feel like David would’ve loved a chance to work on the script before we had to start shooting. We did delay but not enough for him to feel he’d solved a lot of the problems. I think we had the most amazing group of actors, amazing crew. It’s meaningful to me and I don’t really compare them.“
In addition to Alien 3: The Assembly Cut being added to HBO Max, the Aliens: Director’s Cut and Alien Resurrection: Special Edition are also now streaming on the service.
