Ralph Fiennes passes on Voldemort role, says Tilda Swinton ‘Would Be Amazing’ in HBO’s Harry Potter series

One of the most significant mysteries surrounding HBO‘s upcoming Harry Potter TV series is who will play the beloved fantasy tale’s serpentine villain, Voldemort. Three years ago, when we first learned about the Harry Potter TV series project, fans called for Ralph Fiennes to reprise his role, but, obviously, it was too early to know whether he was game to return. During an appearance on “The Claudia Winkleman Show” on Friday night, Fiennes commented on the likelihood of his returning to the iconic role.

Fiennes on playing Voldemort again

“I remember being asked the question once we’d shot the total film series, would I reprise the part, and this was some years ago. I said, ‘Yes, I’d love to,’” Fiennes revealed. “But then nothing’s happened and I think that ship has sailed.”

While fans want to see Fiennes play the iconic character again, he thinks the opportunity has passed, but he does have an idea of who could fill his robes. “But I’ll tell you, Tilda Swinton was mentioned somewhere as being a contender, and I think she would be amazing.”

Cillian Murphy reacts to the Voldemort rumors

As it happens, WB has floated Swinton for the role alongside Oppenheimer and Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy, but there’s been no movement on either, as far as we’re aware. Plus, Murphy already denied the rumor, saying, “I don’t know anything about that,” Murphy said on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast. “Also, it’s just really hard to follow anything Ralph Fiennes does. The man is an absolute acting legend, so good luck to whoever’s gonna fill those shoes.”

Who’s it going to be?

I don’t know, you guys. Tilda Swinton and Cillian Murphy both have other commitments. Playing Voldemort doesn’t strike me as a bucket list part for either of them, and playing the villain doesn’t carry the same prestige it once did. Whoever steps up to play Voldemort has their work cut out for them. He’s arguably one of the greatest villains in literary history (at least as far as contemporary fantasy is concerned), and it’s going to take a village to bring the evil wizard back from the grave. I’m of the mind that we don’t need a Harry Potter TV series, but what do I know?

Who do you think should play Voldemort in the new Harry Potter TV series? Do you think WB has already chosen the actor, but they’re keeping the name under a Cloak of Invisibility? Let us know in the comments section below.
