DC Studios shows off Supergirl footage and Clayface teaser trailer at CinemaCon

DC Studios also got to shine at CinemaCon, with co-CEO Peter Safran showcasing some of its upcoming offerings, including Supergirl and Clayface.

Supergirl

According to our own Chris Bumbray, most of Supergirl will be set off planet, with all kinds of different languages spoken. Director Craig Gillespie teased that Supergirl is complex and flawed, unlike her cousin.

Milly Alcock said there was no Krypto on set, but they did use a Romanian street dog as a stand-in, but he wouldn’t respond to instructions. Probably didn’t speak the language. Jason Momoa, who drove out on Lobo’s motorcycle on stage, said he only shot for about 15-18 days, so it’s not a huge role, but he loved playing the part.

Some footage was screened for a sequence in which Supergirl catches a transport alongside Ruthye, but they’re hijacked by female space pirates. Her powers are diminished because she’s not near a yellow sun, but she’s still able to fight back and uses a teleportation phasing device. She’s sent flying out an airlock into space, but returns once she’s powered up by a yellow sun. It looked very cool, but it felt very much in the James Gunn style, with lots of needle drops.

Directed by Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, the upcoming film is based on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the comic series written by Tom King and illustrated by Bilquis Evely. After her father is murdered and the one responsible is still out there, a young alien girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll seeks out Supergirl to help her on a vicious mission. She wants revenge, and if Supergirl doesn’t help her, she’ll do it herself, whatever the cost.

Supergirl stars Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) as Kara Zor-El, alongside Eve Ridley (3 Body Problem) as Ruthye, Matthias Schoenaerts (Rust and Bone) as Krem of the Yellow Hill, David Krumholtz (Oppenheimer) as Zor-El, Emily Beecham (1899) as Alura, and Jason Momoa as Lobo, a role he has longed to play for years. The film will hit theaters on June 26.

Clayface

With so much attention paid to Supergirl, it’s easy to forget about Clayface. However, I’m actually more curious about this one, as it looks like a big departure from what we’ve seen in the DCU so far. DC Studios co-head James Gunn has even described the movie as a “complete horror film.“

CinemaCon audiences got to see the first teaser for the film, which was described as very freaky, with full-on body-horror vibes. The main character, Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries) lays in a hospital bed with a bandaged, bloody face. After being attacked, he has mysterious chemicals pumped into him, and we see his face change. In the final moments, he’s sitting in a bathtub and wipes away his entire face. Creepy.

The film has been directed by James Watkins (Speak No Evil) from a script by Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House) and Hossein Amini (Obi-Wan Kenobi). Tom Rhys Harries (The Gentlemen) stars alongside Naomi Ackie (No Time to Die) and Max Minghella (The Handmaid’s Tale).

Last year, Gunn explained that he never intended on making a Clayface movie in the DC Universe, but Flanagan’s script was just too good to ignore. “I didn’t plan on making a Clayface movie. Mike came in. He pitched this wonderful idea. I was like, ‘Damn, I can’t believe you got me to want to make a Clayface movie,’” Gunn said. “But he’s got to write the script and who knows how that’s going to work. He goes and he writes the script. First draft is great. Second draft is even better. And then I’m like, ‘Let’s do it.’ So we found a place for it because if there’s quality stuff, we can find a way to work it in.” This one is slated for a October 23 release.
