Universal shows off Violent Night 2, Focker In-Law trailer & more at CinemaCon
Universal had a lot to show off at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, including the first look at Violent Night 2, the action comedy sequel featuring David Harbour as an ass-kicking Santa Claus, the first trailer for Focker In-Law (which you can actually watch now!), and more.
Violent Night 2
David Harbour returns as Santa for Violent Night 2, with the rest of the cast featuring Kristen Bell, Daniela Melchior, Joe Pantoliano, and Jared Harris. Tommy Wirkola has returned to direct the sequel from a screenplay by Pat Casey and Josh Miller.
A trailer was screened, and it seems that Harris’ character is on the naughty list, with Santa arriving to beat the shit out of him. However, in a bit of a twist, Santa himself winds up on the naughty list because he’s forgotten the meaning of Christmas and loses his powers.
Harris’ character is out for revenge, with Santa now being hunted while also trying to live as a regular person. The story takes place over the entire holiday season, and the trailer ends with the reveal that Bell is a ripped, ultra-sexy Mrs. Claus who comes to help Santa fight, yelling, “Get away from my man” to the army of killers.
In true sequel fashion, Casey and Miller teased last year that the next installment would be bigger than the first. “The Violent Night movies are not as big budget as the Sonic movies, but we still want this one to feel bigger than the first one,” Miller said. “And you don’t want Santa just trapped in a mansion again.” Miller also teased that while the first one “lived in a Die Hard space,” the sequel will try to bring in “a little Western influence.“
Violent Night 2 will be released on December 4.
Focker In-Law
The Fockers franchise has returned after sixteen years with Focker In-Law. The new sequel features Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller, Teri Polo, Blythe Danner, and Owen Wilson returning to reprise their roles. Skyler Gisondo and Bernie Feldstein play Henry and Samantha, the children of Greg (Stiller) and Pam (Polo), with Ariana Grande as a “ballbuster” engaged to Henry. A new trailer for the movie was screened, and surprise, surprise, it’s actually been released online as well. Check that out below!
The film is set to hit theaters on November 25.
Snoop Dogg Biopic
Snoop Dogg took to the stage to talk about his upcoming biopic, which is finally moving forward with Craig Brewer (Coming 2 America) directing and Jonathan Daviss (Outer Banks) starring. Snoop teased, “If you’re gonna make a Snoop Dogg movie you better believe it’s gonna be R-rated, but kids – ask your parents.” Filming is set to kick off this summer for a 2027 release.
Minions & Monsters
I can’t say I ever saw the Despicable Me franchise getting as big as it has, but people lose their shit over the little yellow guys. Set in 1920s Hollywood, Minions & Monsters feature the mischief-making characters trying to find the lead of their monster movie.
Illumination’s Chris Meledandri teases, “This is a movie that celebrates cinema. It starts in the 1920s… They [the minions] discover something quite unexpected.” He then shared some footage from the film. The first involved a bunch of minions on several horses as they chase a bandit on the run, with the action moving into a train as police cars join the pursuit, but it turns out it’s all part of a Keystone Cops type of movie shoot. Lots of nods to the silent film era, with Charlie Chaplin in the Modern Times factory sequence and Harold Lloyd hanging from the clock tower.
Another clip shows the minions now working at the studio after the boss falls for their antics. Our own Chris Bumbray said it was like Minions meets Babylon, and it might be the only time he’s wanted to see a Minions movie.
The sequel will land in theaters on July 1.
Other Mommy
Jessica Chastain returns to horror with Other Mommy, which follows a young girl named Bela who becomes the target of a paranormal entity known as Other Mommy, who becomes increasingly aggressive, threatening the safety of Bela’s family.
A rather creepy trailer was screened during the presentation, where it was revealed that Chastain plays two roles: a mother with a young daughter and a demon posing as her, trying to get her daughter. Looks intense.
This one is set to hit theaters on October 9.
