Disney releases The Dog Stars trailer at CinemaCon, plus looks at The Devil Wears Prada 2 & more

Disney is bringing CinemaCon to a close with the last studio presentation of the convention, and the studio has dropped the new trailer for Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars (which has also been released online), along with sneak peeks at some of its other upcoming movies.

The Dog Stars

A new trailer for The Dog Star was released at CinemaCon and is now available online for everyone to enjoy. I like this. The film stars Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin, Guy Pearce, and Benedict Wong. You can check out that trailer below.

Elordi stars as Hig, a pilot living in near-isolation in an airplane hangar with only his dog and a hardened gunman for company in the aftermath of a pandemic. But when a mysterious radio transmission comes through, he risks everything during a journey into the unknown. The Dog Stars will be released on August 28.

Shortly after wrapping the film, Ridley Scott said it might be his best movie. “The one I just finished, The Dog Stars, [shot for just 34 days],” he said. “It’s the speed of a TV show, but maybe my best movie. Every movie is a discovery of who you are, and making choices about actors. Before I speak to anybody, I look at everything they’ve done. I cast Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley, Guy Pearce, and Josh Brolin. Frequently, the biggest thing I’m good at is casting. If they’re available, normally I get them.“

The Devil Wears Prada 2

Twenty years after the original movie, Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci have returned for The Devil Wears Prada 2.

A short clip shows Miranda Priestly walking around a table, asking for pitches. As you might expect, she’s unimpressed, quipping, “May my suicide be brief and painless.” After being reprimanded, she adds, “I’m not talking about killing other people. Yet.”

The sequel finds Andy (Hathaway) returning to Runway as Miranda Priestly (Streep) navigates a new media landscape and Runway‘s position within it. They reconnect with another former assistant, Emily (Blunt), who is now the head of a luxury brand with funding that could ensure Runway‘s survival. The film is set to be released on May 1.

Whalefall

Based on the novel by Daniel Kraus, Whalefall follows a young scuba diver searching for his father’s remains in the ocean, but wouldn’t you know it, he’s swallowed by a sperm whale, leaving him only an hour to escape.

We saw a crazy scene from the film, in which star Austin Abrams is menaced by a whale. With no hope of getting away, Abrams tries to hide, but is caught and dragged around while frantically holding on for dear life before he’s eventually swallowed up. Sounds intense. The film will be released on October 16.

Hexed

Disney also announced that Hailee Steinfeld and Rashida Jones would be the leads of Hexed, the studio’s new animated feature. Steinfeld voices Billie Doe, a young girl who discovers she’s a witch. Jones voices her mom. A clip from the film was screened, with Billie entering a world of magic and encountering a talking book of spells, a talking ink pen, and other magical objects.

The studio seemed pumped on the film, which it clearly wants to be another Frozen-style money maker. This one is set for a November 25 release.

Ice Age: Boiling Point

The sixth installment of the Ice Age franchise is described as “a dinosaur-and-lava-filled madcap adventure that takes Manny, Sid, Diego, Ellie, Scrat and the rest of the herd to visit never-before-seen corners of the treacherous Lost World.” We saw the opening scene, which, like the other movies, starts with Scrat, but now he has a baby. Looks very cute. The film will hit theaters on February 5, 2027.
