An official teaser trailer for Clayface shows Tom Rhys Harries transforming into the malleable and malevolent Batman villain
Everyone has those days when they wake up in the morning, look in the mirror, and don’t like what they see. What if you could erase that blemish with a swipe of your wrist, or straighten that bump at the ridge of your nose? You’d feel like a completely different person. However, what if the compound you use to make these changes changes you? How much is too much of a good thing? In DC Studios‘ Clayface, actor Matt Hagen learns that even something that feels like a blessing can become a curse when it begins to make irreversible changes to his biological makeup, transforming him into a monster. Today, DC is giving Batman fans their first honest-to-goodness glimpse at Clayface with a new teaser trailer for the upcoming body-horror film. That’s right, folks, they’re going for it! Get ready!
What Happens in DC’s First Clayface Trailer?
In today’s Clayface teaser, we find Hollywood’s latest sweetheart, Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries), lying in a hospital bed, his head bandaged, his one visible eye bulging, bloodshot, and swollen. Someone cut Matt to ribbons, ruining his camera-ready face and torpedoing his career. However, there’s a new cosmetic of sorts that could change everything, bring Matt back to his former glory. Still, the compound isn’t exactly stable, and when Matt gets too much of a good thing, he begins to change into something unholy, something he can’t control. Matt Hagen is slowly melting away, and all that’s left is Clayface.
James Watkins (Speak No Evil) directs Clayface from a script by Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House) and Hossein Amini (Obi-Wan Kenobi). Tom Rhys Harries (The Gentlemen) stars alongside Naomi Ackie (No Time to Die) and Max Minghella (The Handmaid’s Tale).
Thoughts About the Teaser
I’m genuinely excited about Clayface. Not only is the Matt Hagen iteration of Clayface one of my all-time favorite Bat-villains, but this is also the first time we’re seeing something unexpected since James Gunn and Peter Safran became the co-bosses of DC Studios. Superman was a lot of fun, and Supergirl looks incredible, but Clayface looks as if it’s a full-blown body-horror movie. I love the idea of using the Elseworlds section of DC Studios to tell different types of stories within the legendary comic book universe. I wish Marvel would do something like this. Watkins’ film looks as comic-book accurate as you’d expect, with an intriguing emotional core that (I hope) shines through in the final product. Matt Hagen is a tragic character, and I can’t wait to see what Watkins and Harries bring to a guy who’s trying to live his dream but becomes twisted after an attempt at perfection turns him into something he can hardly recognize.
Clayface Almost Didn’t Happen
Last year, Gunn explained that he never intended to make a Clayface movie in the DC Universe, but Flanagan’s script was just too good to ignore. “I didn’t plan on making a Clayface movie. Mike came in. He pitched this wonderful idea. I was like, ‘Damn, I can’t believe you got me to want to make a Clayface movie,’” Gunn said. “But he’s got to write the script and who knows how that’s going to work. He goes and he writes the script. First draft is great. Second draft is even better. And then I’m like, ‘Let’s do it.’ So we found a place for it because if there’s quality stuff, we can find a way to work it in.”
