Christopher McQuarrie and Michael B. Jordan to put boots on the ground for an adaptation of EA’s Battlefield game franchise
The age of half-assed video game adaptations could be a thing of the past as more top-tier filmmakers sign on to adapt beloved gaming IP for silver screen spectacles. We already know that Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan is writing a live-action Call of Duty movie at Paramount. Still, now we’re getting word that Mission: Impossible filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie is partnering with Michael B. Jordan for a film based on Electronic Arts‘ Battlefield video game franchise.
Who Are the Creative Forces Behind Battlefield?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, McQuarrie will write, direct, and produce the feature, based on the time-honored military shooter game franchise. In addition to McQuarrie, Jordan is producing and will possibly star in the project. To be clear, Jordan’s starring role is not a done deal. His participation in front of the camera will depend on several factors.
Things are developing fast, with EA already lined up to help produce the Battlefield film. THR says “McQuarrie and several others pitched studios and streamers such as Apple and Sony Thursday with other meetings occurring Friday.” It remains unclear whether Netflix will set up a meeting to get involved.
Battlefield versus Call of Duty
Battlefield launched in 2002 as a World War II game titled Battlefield 1942. The most recent entry in the long-running series, Battlefield 6, is the 18th installment of the franchise, which helped reinvigorate interest in the Call of Duty competitor. Battlefield 6 quickly became the highest-selling game of 2025, a first in the franchise’s history. Amazingly, Battlefield 6 outsold last year’s Call of Duty game, which suffered harsh reviews and fan criticism.
It Was Only a Matter of Time
I’ve been waiting for this to happen. When I heard about Sheridan’s Call of Duty movie, I said it was only a matter of time before someone snatched up the rights to Battlefield. The latest Battlefield game, performing like gangbusters, is a massive boon for the war-themed franchise, which strives to put players in the boots of fearless soldiers facing impossible scenarios and larger-than-life battles. Like Call of Duty, Battlefield jumps through time, depicting many forms of combat across different locales and historical periods. It will be interesting to see where McQuarrie and Jordan land for their adaptation.
