Stars David Jonsson and Tom Blyth discuss the challenges of their prison drama Wasteman
I’ve always loved a good prison movie. Whether it’s The Shawshank Redemption or The Green Mile, they often make for intriguing stories looking at the core of humanity. And I absolutely loved Wasteman (check out my review HERE) as it tells a story of one man’s yearning for freedom. At this point, it’s one of my favorite films of the year and is such a satisfying watch. And one of the elements that stands out so much is the fantastic lead performances from its two powerhouse actors.
I was fortunate enough to chat with stars David Jonsson and Tom Blyth about their roles in the film. I consider Jonsson to be one of the best actors working today (check out The Long Walk and Alien Romulus if you haven’t) so it was great to hear his approach to acting. Tom Blyth, who was fantastic in The Hunger Games: A Ballad of Snakes and Songbirds, couldn’t be more different from his character in Wasteman. It seems as though they were really able to immerse themselves in this world by actually shooting at a real prison. You can check out all of this and more in the video above!
Wasteman plot:
Taylor is branded a “wasteman” by society, his family and even in prison. In a world of drugs, parties, gangs and violence, so far, he’s managed to keep out of trouble. However, with the arrival of new cellmate Dee, the chance to make early parole and get his life back are put in jeopardy.
Wasteman is currently playing in theaters.
