Could John Cena star in a Knight Rider movie?

Could KITT ride again? Scooper Daniel Richtman took to his Patreon to claim that not only is Universal Pictures developing a Knight Rider movie, but that John Cena is already attached to star.

Richtman added that Matt Mider and Kevin Burrows (The Package) are writing the script. Of course, nothing has been confirmed at this time, but it’s somewhat surprising that Knight Rider hasn’t received a modern big-screen update like so many of its ’80s brethren. We’ve seen The A-Team, 21 Jump Street, The Equalizer, Miami Vice, and more all make the leap to the big screen, so why not Knight Rider? The classic series starred David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight, a former detective given a new identity by a tech billionaire to help fight crime. Aiding him in that pursuit was KITT, an artificially intelligent and nearly indestructible car.

The original ’80s series was followed by several TV movies, including Knight Rider 2000 and Knight Rider 2010, as well as a couple of spinoffs, such as Team Knight Rider and a 2008 sequel series which followed the estranged son of Hasselhoff’s character. There have been rumblings of a Knight Rider movie before, with James Wan’s Atomic Monster teaming up with Spyglass Media to develop a movie back in 2000, but nothing has ever come of it. James Gunn has also spoken of his desire to develop a modern revival of the series with David Hasselhoff but didn’t think he would ever find the time to do it. Now that he’s co-CEO of DC Studios, I would imagine it’s become an impossibility.

John Cena will next be seen in Argylle, an upcoming spy action comedy from Matthew Vaughn. The film stars Bryce Dallas Howard as Elly Conway, a reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie. But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books — which center on secret agent Argylle (Henry Cavill) and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate — begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past. Argylle will be released on February 2, 2024, followed by a streaming release on Apple TV+ at a later date.
