Escape from New York reimagining in the works at StudioCanal along with a reboot of The Howling

During StudioCanal’s presentation at CinemaCon, the company announced it will partner with The Picture Company to develop a reimagining of John Carpenter’s Escape from New York. Additionally, StudioCanal is also developing a reimagining of Joe Dante’s classic werewolf flick, The Howling. And although it seems like the odd one out in that lineup, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that the company also announced that Paddington 4 is currently in development. I do love those movies.

Escape from New York

There have been rumblings of a reimagining, reboot, or legacy sequel for Escape from New York for years, and this is just the latest one. Radio Silence, the filmmaking group consisting of Tyler Gillett, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, and Chad Villella, were once attached to develop a sequel to the film. Nothing was official, but they did seem keen on getting Kurt Russell back as Snake Plissken. But Radio Silence stepped away from the project two years ago.

“I think, in hindsight, it feels crazy that we would think we would, post-Scream, step into a John Carpenter franchise,” Gillett said. “You never know. There’s still interest in it and we’ve had a few conversations about it but we’re not attached in any official capacity.“

The original movie took place in the futuristic year of 1997 and found Manhattan transformed into a giant maximum-security prison. When terrorists hijack Air Force One, the President of the United States makes it to an escape pod, which crashes in Manhattan. Desperate to recover him, the government turns to Snake Plissken.

The Howling

Although I’ve never been interested in a reboot of Escape from New York, I’m more open to a reimagining of The Howling. The first film is still great, but the various sequels have really brought the franchise down. I’d love to see a good old-fashioned werewolf flick again, with (hopefully) practical effects and a true love of the genre, but… I’m not going to get my hopes up.

The 1981 movie starred Dee Wallace as a newswoman who, after an encounter with a serial killer, is sent to a remote mountain resort whose residents may not be what they seem. Together with An American Werewolf in London, also released in 1981, the film gave us some of the best werewolf effects ever seen.

Paddington 4

We’ve known about a fourth installment of the Paddington franchise for a couple of years, but it’s nice to know they’re still working on it. The first two Paddington movies are some of the most delightful films I’ve ever watched. Director Paul King didn’t return for Paddington in Peru as he made the difficult choice to helm Wonka instead, but the sequel was still a critical and commercial success.

Are you down for a reboot of Escape from New York and/or The Howling?
