SPOILERS: Steven Spielberg takes over CinemaCon to showcase new footage for Disclosure Day

Steven Spielberg is set to return to familiar territory with Disclosure Day, with the film revolving around the revelation of alien life and those who would keep it secret. With Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and War of the Worlds, Spielberg has made some excellent movies about aliens, and I’ve got my fingers crossed that his latest will be a worthy addition to that list. During Universal’s presentation at CinemaCon, the mystery of Disclosure Day has been lifted, somewhat, with new footage. If you want to go in blind, there is some information you might want to avoid, so look out for SPOILERS.

Disclosure Day at CinemaCon

Steven Spielberg made his first-ever appearance at CinemaCon and promised it would not be his last. He also accepted the MPA America250 Award and told the audience that we need longer theatrical windows, suggesting 60 or even 120 days. The exhibitors in the room loved that, which our own Chris Bumbray pointed out was noteworthy as Universal has had some notoriously short windows in recent years.

He added that theaters need original stories and that if they rely on preexisting IP, they will lose audiences. He singled out Project Hail Mary as a success in that regard.

Then, Spielberg introduced some footage from Disclosure Day. “This movie is going to answer questions but also cause you to ask a lot of questions,” he teased. “This movie is an experience and all you need to get from the beginning to the end is a seatbelt.” With Close Encounters of the Third Kind, he said he was just speculating, and it was simply a great story, but Disclosure Day was made with certainty and promises a lot more truth than fiction. He also stated that no footage from the third act will be shown, not even a still image.

The footage centers on Josh O’Connor’s character, who has stolen footage of aliens being experimented on. The message Emily Blunt’s character was spouting in the previous trailers turns out to be math, which O’Connor can understand and wants to disclose to the world. Obviously, the government isn’t too keen on that, and they’re hunting him down. We also find out that O’Connor and Blunt’s characters were abducted by aliens as children, which explains their connection, even though their memories were erased or suppressed.

The trailer was very cool, showcasing tons of action, and we’re pretty excited for this one.

What We Know

Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada 2) stars in Disclosure Day alongside Josh O’Connor (Wake Up Dead Man), Colin Firth (Young Sherlock), Eve Hewson (Jay Kelly), Colman Domingo (The Running Man), Wyatt Russell (Monarch: Legacy of Monsters), and more.

Spielberg has said that he made this film because “I’ve always been fascinated with things that cannot be explained. When I was just a little kid, I remember developing a real curiosity about the sky at night, and what’s happening up there. And, also, not the possibility, but the guarantee that there is life off this planet.”

There has also been speculation that Disclosure Day could be a secret follow-up to Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I’m not convinced, but Blunt has teased that “There are definitely questions posed by Close Encounters that are answered in Disclosure Day.“

Disclosure Day will hit theaters on June 12.
