David Leitch offers an update that the trigger will finally be pulled on the Gears of War movie
Netflix and Leitch prepare for war
The Fall Guy and Bullet Train director David Leitch has been attached to direct a movie adaptation of the Gears of War video game franchise for Netflix. Leitch’s producing partner, Kelly McCormick, said they’ve been working on writing the script with Jon Spaihts and are “really excited about it.“ She added, “There’s a lot of energy from [Gears of War company] The Coalition and from Netflix, because The Coalition is releasing a game in 2026. We won’t hit that release date, but maybe something that feels relevant to the release of the new game. It’s an opportunity for David to do a war film, which he hasn’t gotten to do yet, and a bit of sci-fi in his own way with this beloved IP in his own way.“
Pull the trigger
According to Collider, Leitch has given a positive update on the video game adaptation, which has been developing for four years. The director was in attendance at this year’s CinemaCon event to promote How to Rob a Bank. When he was asked about the Gears of War movie, Leitch said,
Gears of War, I think, is going to happen. We have a great draft that’s in progress that’s in really great shape. The studio’s more determined than ever to make it. Netflix is 100% behind it. The Coalition is fired up, as well. They have their game releasing this year, as well, and so it’s all lining up that that movie will happen.”
Who will star?
So, who will be headlining the film for Netflix? One actor who was particularly vocal about starring in the movie is Dave Bautista. He even called upon fans last year to get the word out. “Start an online thing about freaking Gears of War,” he said. “Come on, Netflix. Come on, already. It’s not like I’m badgering them. Come on, Netflix. Get it together.“
Franchise creator Cliff Bleszinski is approving of Bautista to play Marcus Fenix. “Dave Bautista man, the dude dressed up in Gears armor online,” Bleszinski said. “He’s proven his range from the last Blade Runner movie through to him playing Drax The Destroyer and all that. In the Knock at the Cabin, he’s got great range. I think he’d be perfect for it. He’s got the body type and once again, I’m happy to give my two cents and consult, but the biggest thing I hope for is that it has heart.“
