Kathryn Newton confirms her return as Cassie Lang for Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday

Not long after Marvel revealed the first Avengers: Doomsday trailer at CinemaCon, the studio is excited to announce the addition of another cast member to the superhero-heavy ensemble: Kathryn Newton as Cassie Lang! Newton played Cassie Lang, the daughter of Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), aka Ant-Man, in 2023’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and now she’s back to make a big splash in Marvel’s next MCU event film.

Newton unboxes a surprise from Marvel

Newton announced her return on social media, courtesy of an unboxing video. Remember when those were all the rage? In the video, Newton narrates the unboxing of Marvel’s “gift,” lovingly ensconsed in bubble wrap to protect the fragile prop. After some fiddling, Newton reveals a tiny director’s chair, which harkens back to the initial marketing push when Marvel slowly revealed for the majority of the Avengers: Doomsday cast. Newton’s chair refers to Cassie’s ability to use Pym Particles to shrink or grow, depending on the situation.

What happens in the new Doomsday trailer?

When Avengers: Doomsday took over CinemaCon, the trailer for the upcoming event film teased several highlights from the oncoming storm of superhero shenanigans, including Shang-Chi fighting Gambit, Mystique posing as Yelena, the Fantastic Four meeting the Thunderbolts, and more.

Thor is the leader of the Avengers now, and is very serious as he prepares them for a new battle. Thor says, “Mark my words, we are going to need a miracle.” The trailer concludes with Steve Rogers showing up, but Thor doesn’t quite believe it until Rogers summons Mjolnir into his hand. The trailer also features Thor fighting Dr. Doom, giving us our first look at his masked face, and we hear the villain speaking in voiceover.

Newton on the rise

Hollywood is hot for Kathryn Newton, with the 29-year-old actress landing one project after the next. She recently starred opposite Samara Weaving in Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, and is currently filming the Eli Craig horror film White Elephant, which follows eight friends whose annual festive holiday gift exchange spirals into a cutthroat game of Christmas carnage. The cast of White Elephant includes Newton, Madeleine Arthur, Josh Brener, Nick Jonas, KJ Apa, Ashley Park, Alexandra Shipp, and Justice Smith.

While Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantummania is one of the MCU’s weakest films, I’m looking forward to Cassie‘s return to the franchise, hoping for a better effort that makes her character shine. In the comics, Cassie is an incredible addition to the Young Avengers, and Newton is tremendously talented. It shouldn’t be that hard to give her reasons to stand out when Doomsday comes to theaters.
