One Spoon of Chocolate: The RZA returns with a stylish action thriller

While most know the RZA for his iconic work with the Wu-Tang Clan, he’s also had a long, successful parallel career as an action hero/director, with roles in Nobody 1 & 2, Brick Mansions, and his films The Man with the Iron Fists (and its sequel), Cut Throat City, and now One Spoon of Chocolate. The film reunites him with Quentin Tarantino, for whom he memorably scored Kill Bill: Volume 1, and he is presenting the film, which just got its first trailer—embedded above.

RZA wrote, directed, and produced this action drama, which stars the voice of Miles Morales himself, Shameik Moore, opposite a unique cast that includes RJ Cyler, Paris Jackson, and the great Blair Underwood. In it, Moore plays Unique, “a veteran and ex-convict seeking a fresh start in a small town.” After an altercation with a gang of locals, he starts to suspect they may have something to do with the disappearance of young men in the area—including his cousin. As you can see from the trailer, it looks like it’s filled with balls-to-the-wall action, including some blistering fight sequences that give Moore a chance to show his action hero bona fides.

One thing is for sure: the RZA knows action. In fact, I’d wager a whole generation of us was introduced to the classics of Hong Kong kung fu cinema thanks to Wu-Tang and how he always worked in riffs based on classics of the genre, in particular the work of the Shaw Bros. studio. This one seems more contemporary and grounded than The Man with the Iron Fists, and I’m curious to see what the RZA does with it. Funny enough, the movie got high praise from his Nobodyco-star Bob Odenkirk, who recommended I check it out back when I interviewed him for Nobody 2 last summer (check out that interview here).

One Spoon of Chocolate hits theaters on May 1st.
