Dwayne Johnson’s Fighting With My Family being developed into a stage musical
Fighting With My Family, the 2019 sports-comedy biopic starring Florence Pugh, is being developed into a stage musical.

Written and directed by Stephen Merchant (The Office), the film follows Saraya Bevis (Florence Pugh), who is raised to be a wrestler by her mom (Lena Headey) and dad (Nick Frost). When the WWE comes through town, she and her brother, Zak (Jack Lowden), get the opportunity to audition and make their dreams of stardom come true. Dwayne Johnson produced the film and appeared as himself.
In a statement, Merchant said, “A young woman from the ‘chorus line’ fighting to get her big break, surrounded by theatrical, larger-than-life characters and huge sweeping emotions. I approached each wrestling match like it was a different dance number, building to a big show-stopping finale. Seeing the film reimagined for the stage feels like the natural next step.“
Johnson added that the story of Fighting With My Family is “exceptionally well-suited for the stage.” He continued: “It’s packed with personal emotion expressed through the dynamic world of wrestling, which has always been about storytelling and connecting with a live audience. Working with Stephen Merchant on the film was a truly special experience, and his brilliant work deserves this new act. As it comes to life musically, I have no doubt it will be an absolute blast for theatergoers.“
The musical is being developed by Tilted Musicals in collaboration with Seven Bucks Productions, Kevin Misher, Birmingham Hippodrome, and Merchant. Olivier Award-winning playwright will write the project, which will include a new soundtrack by Miranda Cooper and Nick Coler.

Johnson has a couple of major projects coming up, including the live-action adaptation of Moana, in which he has reprised his role as Maui. Alongside Johnson as Maui, the live-action film stars Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana; John Tui as Moana’s no-nonsense father, Chief Tui; Frankie Adams, who portrays Moana’s playful and strong-willed mother, Sina; and Rena Owen as Moana’s revered Gramma Tala. The film is set to hit theaters on July 10.
And then there’s Jumanji: Open World, which is being billed as the final installment of the franchise. We got a sneak peek of the trailer at CinemaCon, which reveals that the video-game characters are being brought into the real world. This one will be released on December 25.
