Oscar Issac explains the “Somehow Palpatine returned” line from The Rise of Skywalker
Star Wars at the movies
This summer, Star Wars returns to cinema houses. The Mandalorian and Grogu will be the latest big-screen effort from the iconic franchise, but interestingly, it will be the first Star Wars movie since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. Not for the lack of trying, but Lucasfilm’s initial plan was to expand the universe with spin-offs and prequels following the sequel trilogy in an effort to become its own version of the Marvel universe. The Mandalorian and Grogu will be capitalizing on the popular Disney+ series, and Shawn Levy’s Starfighter will be following this installment.
Oscar Issac explains the infamous line
As the Disney phase of Star Wars began, it was apparent that, unlike Marvel, the sequel trilogy did not seem to be planned ahead. There are plot developments and threads that are set up, but abandoned. Equally, some added elements are thinly touched on. One such famous case is Poe Dameron’s announcement to the Resistance that “Somehow Palpatine returned.” The line has become quite a meme in the online movie circles.
Oscar Issac, who plays Dameron, recently appeared on The Happy Sad Confused podcast, where he addressed the genesis of the line. According to Gizmondo, Issac explained,
Those were reshoots. We had to do reshoots. Cause when I look at it, I’m like, ‘That wig’s pretty good…’ But yeah, man, those are like those surgical strikes where you come in, [they’re] scrambling, trying to get everything going. And I think that was like a new addition at the end. So there was a lot of movement and flux throughout that whole thing. But if you’d asked me at that moment, if I thought that was going to be [chuckles] that line, I wouldn’t have known.”
He, then, humorously concluded, “Hey man, I committed to the exasperation, that’s for sure.”
The Mandalorian season 4
While The Mandalorian and Grogu continues the story of the TV series, many have thought that the film was compiled from unmade scripts from the planned season 4 of the show. According to director Jon Favreau, this isn’t the case. “You can’t just take those scripts and turn them into a movie,” he said. “There were a lot of characters, it assumed you’d watched the whole show, and it was teeing up what was happening moving into [the second season of ] Ahsoka. It was about Grand Admiral Thrawn and following the larger storyline [of this era of the Star Wars timeline].“
