The alleged leaker of Paramount+’s The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender arrested, could get 7 years in prison
One of the worst things that could happen to your new animated series (or any film project, for that matter) is if it leaks online ahead of its official release. Whole teams of people work tirelessly on the project, from its creation to marketing, scheduling, and protection. Then, an internet-savvy tool leaks the film online, derailing the studio’s best-laid plans and presenting it in an unintended way. Not cool, man. Not cool at all. In the case of Paramount+‘s The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, an alleged 26-year-old man leaked the new Airbender movie on social media on April 16. Today, we have an update on the leak, and if he’s found guilty, the leaker could face up to seven years in prison.
How Did the Theft Allegedly Happen?
According to The Straits Times, a 26-year-old man who allegedly leaked the unreleased film is in custody for accessing a media server without authorization. Reports say the leaker allegedly downloaded the movie and leaked parts of it online. The man was identified and arrested a day after reports of the leak circulated online. Many of the man’s electronic devices were seized, including one that contained a copy of the unreleased film. The maximum jail term for the offense is 7 years, and a fine not exceeding $50,000, or both. The leaker, who goes by the online name @ImStillDissin, says Nickelodeon “accidentally e-mailed” him “the entire Avatar Aang movie.”
What’s The Legend of Aang About?
The film follows Aang, the world’s last Airbender, as he learns of an ancient power that could save his culture from extinction. With the help of his friends, he embarks on a global quest to find it before it falls into the wrong hands and threatens to upend the peace they sacrificed everything to achieve. The voice cast includes Eric Nam as Aang, Jessica Matten as Katara, Román Zaragoza as Sokka, Dionne Quan as Toph, Steven Yeun as Zuko, and Dave Bautista as the main villain. The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender arrives on Paramount+ on October 9.
Other Avatar: The Last Airbender Releases
In addition to the movie, the Avatar franchise will continue with a brand-new sequel series. Nickelodeon officially ordered Avatar: Seven Havens last year. The new series comes from original creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko and is “set in a world shattered by a devastating cataclysm. A young Earthbender discovers she’s the new Avatar after Korra – but in this dangerous era, that title marks her as humanity’s destroyer, not its savior. Hunted by both human and spirit enemies, she and her long-lost twin must uncover their mysterious origins and save the Seven Havens before civilization’s last strongholds collapse.”
