The first reactions to The Devil Wears Prada 2 say it’s a fun throwback sequel that’s “chic,” and “surprising,” but not as good as the original

It’s been two decades since Miranda (Meryl Streep) and Andy (Anne Hathaway) mixed it up at Runway, and soon, The Devil Wears Prada fans will walk alongside the dynamic duo again for The Devil Wears Prada 2, coming to theaters on May 1, 2026. However, before the comedic sequel sashays down the catwalk and into cinemas, those who’ve seen the movie early are sharing their first reactions.

Here are some of the first reactions to The Devil Wears Prada 2, starting with JoBlo’s own editor-in-chief, Chris Bumbray:

#TheDevilWearsPrada2 is good escapism but also tinged with a welcome note of sadness for how – in the 20 years since the first – the formerly untouchable institutions now totally depend on the largess of the ultra rich. An unexpectedly honest aspect that elevates it somewhat.…

The Devil Wears Prada 2 reactions feel incredibly muted.

The general consensus seems to be: it’s fine, story is timely but this sequel isn’t really necessary or worth the wait.

Of course, no surprise that the cast is great because all the main actors are Hollywood icons and…

#TheDevilWearsPrada2 is DEVILISHLY FANTASTIC! This was tailored perfectly and relevant to how the state of journalism currently is. A flawless ensemble, led by the elegant Streep and sharp as nails Hathaway, it feels like no time has passed. A couture sequel we need right now. pic.twitter.com/ZdCAY7XPe5

Oh my gosh??? I adored DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2. Went into it a skeptic, came out emotional and satisfied! Holds all the charm of an early aughts pic while exploring the depth of the changing landscape of media in times of evolving taste and technology. A pure delight! pic.twitter.com/4MiR9yDJnG

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2 is a FUN and FIERCE sequel that makes a statement. Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep slip back into their iconic roles with ease and SERVE in every single frame. It feels familiar in the best way, timely in the right ways, and is well worth the wait. pic.twitter.com/oD1RUSEkID

#TheDevilWearsPrada2 is the perfect summer movie. Where the original seduced us with wide-eyed ambition, this sequel arrives fully self-possessed — sharper, wiser, and draped in the kind of confidence that cannot be bought, only earned. Meryl, Anne, and Emily are a phenomenal,… pic.twitter.com/RR5Ey7DN6O

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2 is SHARP and DOWNRIGHT CHIQUE. Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, and the returning cast seamlessly slip back into their roles without missing a beat. Its commentary on journalism is HILARIOUS and, perhaps, VERY relevant to today’s culture. #TheDevilWearsPrada2 pic.twitter.com/n4mobBW9OZ

The feelings of watching The Devil Wears Prada 2 and the previous one are significantly different. As a young girl who just arrived in US to pursuit my career back then , the first one feels like a dream, everything was so glamorous and fascinating. But this sequel although… pic.twitter.com/gRsqKX8eJx

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is a whirlwind of emotions but reins it in the most vulnerable of ways. It’s striking, witty and hits close to home if you have an artistic itch. The quartet hits every note beautifully – Streep, Hathaway, Blunt and Tucci are magnificent.… pic.twitter.com/pB9sRIxEwk

The Devil Wears Prada 2 reunites the original main cast with director David Frankel and writer Aline Brosh McKenna. It introduces an all-new runway of characters, including Kenneth Branagh, Simone Ashley, Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, Patrick Brammall, Caleb Hearon, Helen J. Shen, Pauline Chalamet, B.J. Novak, and Conrad Ricamora. Tracie Thoms and Tibor Feldman also reprise their roles as Lily and Irv from the first film.

Wendy Finerman produced The Devil Wears Prada 2, with Michael Bederman, Karen Rosenfelt, and McKenna executive producing.

The 2006 movie starred Anne Hathaway as Andy Sachs, a brilliant but sensible new graduate who lands a job as an assistant to Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), the demanding editor-in-chief of a high-fashion magazine. The film also starred Emily Blunt as Emily Charlton, Miranda’s senior assistant, and Stanley Tucci as Nigel Kipling, the magazine’s art director. The film was a huge success, grossing $326 million and earning Streep an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

Heh. I love that MaggieM brought her Labubu to see The Devil Wears Prada 2. It’s a nice touch, and she’s wearing such a fancy outfit too! It looks like opinions on The Devil Wears Prada 2 are mostly positive, with a few outliers not being entirely on board with the sequel’s direction. I’ve never seen the original (I did end up watching Practical Magic the other night, as I promised), but I plan to watch it before Prada 2 hits digital platforms. I like the idea of Prada 2 emphasizing the importance of journalism in today’s fast-moving and questionable times. I could see myself enjoying that aspect of the film a lot, and from what I can gather, many of the performances are top-notch. I’m game.
